Course

Cambridge A Level Mathematics: Mechanics (9709 Paper 4, pilot)

All five Paper 4 sections: forces, motion, momentum, Newton’s laws and energy/work/power. Worked examples and guided labs lead to changed independent practice and an original 50-mark timed sitting with paper mark schemes.

What you'll learn

  • Identify forces on one particle and distinguish balanced forces from third-law pairs acting on separate bodies
  • Resolve forces with stated axes and angles, calculate resultants and form equilibrium equations
  • Find normal reaction and distinguish actual static friction from its limiting value, checking that contact is possible
  • Distinguish signed displacement and velocity from distance and speed in one dimension
  • Sketch and interpret motion graphs using gradients and signed areas with correct units
  • Choose and use constant-acceleration equations, including cases with missing time or acceleration
  • Solve vertical-motion problems with a stated positive direction and gravitational acceleration
  • Use differentiation and integration to find velocity, acceleration and displacement with initial conditions
  • Find rest times and total distance, checking whether the particle reverses direction
  • Calculate signed momentum for a chosen system and state the external-force condition for conservation
  • Use conservation in direct impacts, including bodies that stick together, and identify when the data are insufficient
  • Form equations of motion for constant-force systems, checking friction direction, contact and connection validity
  • Solve connected-particle problems with string tension or rod thrust and one shared acceleration magnitude
  • Use signed work and changes in kinetic and potential energy, accounting for external work and resistance
  • Calculate average and instantaneous power and use driving power to find instantaneous uphill acceleration

Requirements

  • O Level or IGCSE Mathematics, including algebra, graphs, units and simple trigonometry
  • Pure Mathematics 1 differentiation of powers before the Kinematics chapter; integration of powers before its initial-condition lesson
  • Paper and graph paper for sketches, written methods and self-marking
