What you'll learn

  • Draw a free-body diagram that is complete, which is most of the marks on a forces question
  • Say why mass and weight are different quantities, and use each in the right place
  • Apply conservation of momentum to a collision, and tell elastic from inelastic by the energy
  • Take moments about a sensible point, and choose that point to make the algebra vanish
  • Decide when energy is the quicker route than force, and justify the choice

Requirements

  • AS topic 1: resolving a vector into components, and adding vectors
  • AS topic 2: the equations of motion, and reading a gradient off a graph
  • Able to rearrange an equation with several symbols in it
  • Basic trigonometry, including the component of a weight along a slope
