Most people are taught to *"move the number to the other side and flip the sign."* That rule works — but almost nobody remembers **why**, so it's easy to do backwards. There's a better way. Stop memorizing steps and start **seeing** the equation as a balance scale. Once you see it, you'll never get a step wrong again. ## An equation is a balance The `=` sign means exactly one thing: **both sides weigh the same.** So `2x + 1 = 7` is just a claim — *a box of unknown weight x, doubled, plus 1, balances a weight of 7.* Drag the slider until the scale sits level. When the two pans match, the number you landed on **is** x. You didn't "do algebra" there. You made it balance — and the weight that balances it is the answer. That feeling, *level vs. tipping*, is the whole subject. ## The one rule that runs all of algebra To find x on purpose instead of by feel, you only ever obey a single rule: > **Whatever you do to one side, do to the other — or the scale tips.** Every "step" you've ever seen is just this: keep the scale level while you make it simpler. "Move it across and flip the sign" is this rule in disguise. Subtracting 1 from both sides *looks* like the +1 hopped over and became −1. It never moved — you lifted 1 off **both** pans, so the scale stayed level. ## Two moves, and the box stands alone To get x by itself, peel away what surrounds it — staying level at every step. There are only two moves. **Move 1 — lift the same off both pans.** `2x + 1 = 7` carries a spare `+ 1` on the left. Take 1 off *both* sides → `2x = 6`. Still balanced. **Move 2 — split both sides into equal parts.** Now `2x = 6`: two equal boxes balance 6, so one box balances 3. Divide both sides by 2 → `x = 3`. Subtract, then divide. That's every linear equation you'll ever meet. ## Your turn — balance it, then prove it Drag until this one is level. Then lock in the value you found. ## Now the symbols actually mean something Here is the general equation and its answer: `a·x + b = c → x = (c − b) / a` Don't memorize that. **Read** it: take the `b` off both sides → `c − b`. Split into `a` equal parts → `÷ a`. It's the exact two moves you just did with your hands — subtract, then divide. You don't solve equations by recalling rules. You keep a scale balanced while you simplify it: take the same off both sides, then divide both sides equally — and the unknown stands alone. ## One more thing — the next puzzle What happens when peeling away leaves you *owing* weight — like `x + 5 = 2`, where you'd lift 5 off a pan that only holds 2?
